Solar Installation Quotes: Compare Equipment, Output and Scope

Allison Garza · October 20, 2026

Solar installation quotes need to be compared on the same system scope and ownership basis. A low monthly payment does not tell you the installed price, the equipment being supplied or how much electricity the system is expected to generate. Ask solar installation companies for a clear written proposal before comparing offers.

Have recent electricity bills available and explain any planned changes, such as an electric vehicle or a major home addition. Do not assume every future appliance needs to be covered by a larger system today. Ask the installer to show how those expectations affect its recommendation.

Compare solar equipment and production assumptions

Record the panel count and model, inverter equipment, proposed layout and system size. Keep system capacity separate from estimated electricity production: they describe different things. Ask for the annual production estimate and the assumptions behind it.

DOE’s homeowner guidance identifies roof characteristics and shading as important considerations. Ask whether the proposal uses an assessment of your roof and how shade, orientation and available space were considered. If two similar systems have very different output estimates, request an explanation before treating the higher number as better value.

Have any battery equipment itemized separately. A panel-only proposal is not comparable to one that includes storage and backup equipment. Ask what monitoring is included and how you will access it after installation.

Check the complete solar installation scope

The contract should say who handles permitting, utility coordination and the work needed before activation. Ask whether electrical upgrades, roof preparation or other additional work is included or subject to a later assessment. Identify the point at which you will receive a firm scope.

Compare roof-penetration responsibilities, equipment warranties and installation workmanship terms separately. Ask who responds if monitoring shows a problem and how service is arranged. Keep the proposed completion sequence distinct from a guaranteed activation date, particularly where another organization must inspect or approve the work.

Use our solar installation planning guide to prepare those questions before choosing a company.

Separate the solar cash price from payment offers

Request the cash price and the complete financed terms as separate documents. CFPB’s solar-financing research highlights the importance of understanding fees and payment assumptions. Ask whether the financed price differs from the cash price, whether a later payment changes and what any proposed lump-sum payment depends on.

For a lease or power-purchase arrangement, identify who owns the equipment and what the agreement requires if you sell the house. Do not compare those arrangements as though they were identical to purchasing the system outright.

Keep incentives and projected bill savings separate from the amount you contract to pay. Verify any claimed program and eligibility at the time of your decision; do not assume an advertised credit will be available to you or treat projected savings as a guaranteed result.

Ready to narrow the options? Explore solar installation companies in your area and compare their written equipment, scope and payment terms on the same basis.
