Siding replacement quotes should describe the whole wall project, not just the visible siding. Removal, preparation, weather protection and trim can account for important differences between proposals. Ask siding installation companies to explain those items before deciding which price represents better value.
Bring photographs of the elevations you want to change and identify any known leaks, soft areas or damaged trim. Also say whether windows, gutters or roofing are part of the same renovation. A contractor can scope the work more clearly when the connected projects are discussed at the start.
Specify the siding product and finished appearance
A useful siding quote identifies the manufacturer, product line, profile, finish and color. “Vinyl siding” or “fiber cement” leaves too much open. Ask for samples and a description of the trim treatment so the proposal reflects the exterior you expect to see.
Have the company identify which elevations are included and how transitions to retained materials will be finished. If the front of the house uses a different product, make that distinction explicit. Ask whether soffits, fascia, shutters and gutters are included, excluded or being reused.
The aim is a buildable specification, not a longer sales document. A marked-up elevation or a clear list can prevent two contractors from pricing different amounts of work under the same project name.
Compare siding removal and wall preparation
Ask whether existing siding will be removed and what inspection happens afterward. If damaged sheathing or trim is discovered, the contract should explain how repairs are photographed, approved and priced. A low initial quote is difficult to judge when necessary preparation has no defined allowance or pricing method.
Water management deserves its own conversation. PEPA’s vinyl installation guidance addresses a continuous water-resistive barrier. Ask the contractor to explain how the specified siding system, barrier and flashing details work together at windows, doors and other interruptions in the wall.
For fiber cement, ask which manufacturer installation instructions the crew will follow. James Hardie’s guidance shows that fastening and installation details depend on the product and application. Do not assume one generic installation description covers every material.
- What is removed, retained or repaired?
- What weather-barrier and flashing work is included?
- How are penetrations, corners and material transitions detailed?
- Who handles disposal, site protection and cleanup?
- Which costs remain allowances rather than fixed prices?
Choose a siding quote with clear responsibilities
Confirm who orders materials, handles any required permits and coordinates related work. Ask when the final color and trim selections must be approved and how changes affect the schedule. Keep the installed cash price distinct from any monthly financing offer.
Read the product, finish and workmanship warranty terms that apply to the actual proposal. Ask what maintenance the chosen product requires and what documents you receive after installation. The best comparison is the complete project you can verify, not the cheapest headline attached to an incomplete scope.
